Room 101 (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Room101): Basically Kai's whole backstory consists of a series of Room 101s. From a young teenager, he was kidnapped by his government and experimented on, until they decided he was a failure, since he exhibited no physical or obvious signs of alteration.

Dystopia (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Dystopia): Kai's homeworld. Basically, everything is sparkles and rainbows until you realize that the government (several of them, though Kai is unaware that this practice reaches beyond his home area) is basically just plucking up whoever they want to try and turn them into perfect soldiers. Thereby, also a variant of Crapsack World (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CrapsackWorld) fits.

Darkness Induced Audience Apathy (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DarknessInducedAudienceApathy): As exhibited by Kai when he was kidnapped on Bhor. He was surprised by her nigh thoughtlessly violent actions, but not bothered by them.

Despair Event Horizon (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DespairEventHorizon): Kai actually thought they were just going to dispose of him when he was branded a failure.

Power At a Price (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/PowerAtAPrice): Pretty straightforward. Would you want to be stuck listening to everyone's thoughts forever and ever? He currently considers himself to be quite Blessed with Suck (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BlessedWithSuck).

It Got Worse (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ItGotWorse): Usually, what's on Kai's mind when he does something stupid is "How much worse can it be than it already is?" The results are obvious.

Think Happy Thoughts (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ThinkHappyThoughts): Kias is currently Kai's Happy Thoughts. Otherwise, all that time in a medbay? Not so awesome.

Mismatched Eyes (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MismatchedEyes): Kai's are violet and green, and an effect of the genetic mutations.
