1. Make a post listing the characters you play here and, optionally, characters you play at other games too
2. People ask you questions about your characters
3. You respond; pretty simple huh?

So the image of the lone reporter, responsible to no one but the truth, came back a lot stronger. Plus, George's parents were involved as bloggers -- her mother's previous career isn't mentioned, but her mother developed a reputation as an internet celebrity for being daring (or stupid). And Georgia's dad is credited for using his course website and the college radio to keep a lot of college students alive. So she essentially grew up in a media circus, which messed her up in some ways, but kind of gave her the idea of the power of Truth.
(About the only other Big Idea is her loyalty to her brother, who, unlike her parents, does have the whole unconditional love thing for her. Her parents pretty much adopted Georgia and Shaun after their kindergarten son died in the zombie outbreak. Mrs. Mason had to shoot him after he was bit by zombie golden retriever -- so it's kind of understandable Georgia's parents are a bit messed up, and really never got over the death of their son to really bond with their adopted son and daughter.) )
As for the zombie plague, the inactive form might be airborne enough that every mammal has it in Georgia's world, but it's asymptomatic and mostly dormant. It occasionally destroys cancerous cells the immune system misses and hinders colds and flus. Georgia has the rare misfortune that it did partially activate in her eyes, which pretty much busted her ability to cry and her irises' ability to contract. Hence the dark glasses and risk of eye damage.
The active form starts multiplying uncontrollably and hijacks' the host's nervous system to change behavior into 'kill and eat everything moving and, if there's not any other zombies, spread your fluids to make more'. The author got the idea from some types of ant parasites which change ant behavior, IIRC. A lot of the protein goes into either tissue repair or making more virii, hence the 'eat everything'.
(Not too clear why dying activates the virus, besides to keep the zombie mythos theme. Other things can do it, but dying is the big one.)
